It belongs to the <em>Malpighiaceae<\/em> plant family and grows on trees that can reach a height of up to 4.5 metres. The trees have broadly spreading branches and evergreen, oval leaves. The small pinkish-white flowers turn into red-orange or bright red, juicy fruits, which are round or slightly flattened. The seeds have three triangular parts and wavy wings.    <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"664\" data-end=\"930\">The acerola variety <em>Malpighia glabra<\/em> is particularly rich in vitamin C and has a sour taste, making it ideal for products that require a high vitamin C content. Acerola is also rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, potassium and iron. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"1410\"><strong data-start=\"932\" data-end=\"969\">The edible part of the acerola<\/strong> is the fruit (botanically a berry), which is authorised for sale as a fruit in Europe. Acerolas are usually harvested while they are still green, as they have the highest levels of vitamin C, which can be up to twice as high as ripe fruit. The fruit spoils very quickly after harvesting, becoming almost unusable after 3-5 days. Acerola is therefore <strong data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1339\">freeze-dried<\/strong> to preserve as many nutrients as possible.   <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1718\"><strong data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1445\">Freeze-dried acerola powder<\/strong> is from Brazil, one of the world&#8217;s largest producers of acerola<br \/>\nCertified under the European Union Organic Regulation (EU) 2018\/848 and the UK Organic Standards,<br \/>\nby the <em data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1694\">Soil Association<\/em>, with code <strong data-start=\"1704\" data-end=\"1717\">GB-ORG-05<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1718\">\n<p data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1861\"><strong data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1738\">Use<\/strong><br data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"1741\">Ready to use as a food or as an ingredient in dishes.<br data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"1822\"><strong data-start=\"1822\" data-end=\"1848\">Recommended daily intake:<\/strong> 3-5 g\/day.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"1884\"><strong data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"1884\">Uses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1885\" data-end=\"2147\">\n<li data-start=\"1885\" data-end=\"1956\">\n<p data-start=\"1887\" data-end=\"1956\">Mix acerola powder with water and drink as a refreshing drink;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"2001\">\n<p data-start=\"1959\" data-end=\"2001\">Add to cocktails, smoothies or juices;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2060\">\n<p data-start=\"2004\" data-end=\"2060\">Use in desserts &#8211; ice creams, cakes or fruit salads;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2061\" data-end=\"2102\">\n<p data-start=\"2063\" data-end=\"2102\">Mix with yoghurt, porridge or granola;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2147\">\n<p data-start=\"2105\" data-end=\"2147\">Use as an ingredient in biscuits or sauces.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2457\">Acerola is a natural and nutritious fruit, but its <strong data-start=\"2197\" data-end=\"2235\">particularly high vitamin C content<\/strong> can cause mild digestive upset in some people, especially when consumed in large quantities.
