Organic freeze-dried Acerola (Malpighia) powder
From 6.80€
Acerola (Malpighia), also known as Barbados cherry, is a berry native to Central and South America. It belongs to the Malpighiaceae plant family and grows on trees that can reach a height of up to 4.5 metres. The trees have broadly spreading branches and evergreen, oval leaves. The small pinkish-white flowers turn into red-orange or bright red, juicy fruits, which are round or slightly flattened. The seeds have three triangular parts and wavy wings.
The acerola variety Malpighia glabra is particularly rich in vitamin C and has a sour taste, making it ideal for products that require a high vitamin C content. Acerola is also rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, potassium and iron.
The edible part of the acerola is the fruit (botanically a berry), which is authorised for sale as a fruit in Europe. Acerolas are usually harvested while they are still green, as they have the highest levels of vitamin C, which can be up to twice as high as ripe fruit. The fruit spoils very quickly after harvesting, becoming almost unusable after 3-5 days. Acerola is therefore freeze-dried to preserve as many nutrients as possible.
Freeze-dried acerola powder is from Brazil, one of the world’s largest producers of acerola
