Gomasio (or gomashio) is a traditional Japanese spice mix based on toasted sesame seeds and salt. The name comes from two Japanese words: goma (sesame) and shio (salt). Gomasio has been used in East Asian cuisine for centuries, especially in Japan, where it is used both to enhance the flavour of dishes and as a healthier alternative to ordinary salt. It is valued for its ability to impart a strong, nutty flavour to food while reducing overall salt consumption.

Gomasio is often used as a condiment sprinkled on rice, vegetables, pasta or soups. It is particularly popular in vegetarian and macrobiotic diets thanks to its simplicity and nutritional value – sesame seeds are a good source of healthy fats, proteins and minerals. Thanks to its intense flavour, gomasio is an excellent natural flavour enhancer that helps to reduce the total amount of salt in the diet.
