Peanuts originate from South America and date back to ancient civilisations such as the Incas and Aztecs, who cultivated and consumed them as a staple food. Later, peanuts spread to other parts of the world and became an important crop in Africa, Asia and North America. Although botanically a legume, peanuts are often referred to as nuts because of their nutritional value and uses.
Peanuts are an excellent source of protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals. They are an excellent source of plant-based protein, which can be beneficial for muscle growth and recovery. In addition, peanuts contain antioxidants.
Peanuts are used in a variety of ways – raw, roasted, as peanut butter or added to baked goods, salads, snacks and dishes. Peanut oil is also popular for its high acidity point and mild flavour and is therefore widely used in cooking.
People with nut allergies should avoid peanuts as they can cause severe allergic reactions.
To ensure a good balance of nutrients and to avoid excessive calories, the recommended daily intake of peanuts is around 28-30 grams (soaking before eating is recommended).
