Organic freeze-dried acerola (malpighia) powder
Acerola (malpighia), also known as Barbados cherry, is a berry native to Central and South America. It belongs to the Malpighiaceae plant family and grows on trees that can grow up to 4.5 metres tall. The trees have widely spreading branches and evergreen oval leaves. The small pinkish-white flowers turn into reddish-orange or bright red, juicy fruits, which are round or slightly flattened. The seeds have three triangular lobes with wavy wings.
The acerola variety Malpighia glabra is particularly rich in vitamin C, which gives it a sour flavour, making it ideal for products with high vitamin C requirements. Acerola is rich in vitamins and minerals (calcium, potassium, iron).
The edible part of the Malpighia (acerola) is a fruit (botanically, a berry) that is authorised for marketing as a fruit in Europe. Acerola is usually picked while still green, as it retains the highest levels of vitamin C, which can be double that of ripe fruit. The fruit spoils quickly after harvesting, becoming almost unusable within 3-5 days. For this reason, acerola is freeze-dried to preserve as much of its nutrients as possible.
