Organic Amla Fruit Powder – History

Thousands of years before Nobel Prize–winning scientist Linus Pauling presented evidence of the healing powers of vitamin C, Ayurvedic practitioners used amla (often called Indian gooseberry) as a medicinal remedy. Amla is considered one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits found in nature, and 100 grams of fresh amla contain many times more vitamin C than a lemon.

Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and ripens in autumn in the humid forests and hilly regions of the Indian subcontinent. The tree that bears this remarkable fruit is considered sacred in India, where amla is often eaten with salt and chili powder or made into pickles and candied sweets. Although amla is sour when eaten raw, it leaves a sweet aftertaste. Paradoxically, this sour fruit may help reduce stomach acidity and is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat digestive problems.

Herbal researcher Vidhi Bhatia wrote that the use of amla originates from the 5,000-year-old traditional Indian medical system Ayurveda—a discipline focused on promoting good health, supporting the immune system, and rejuvenating and revitalizing the body.

In addition, the fruit is considered exfoliating and astringent. It is said that with regular use, the skin appears younger and firmer. It is also often used to promote shiny and healthier hair.

Usage
Recommended daily intake: ¼–½ teaspoon with warm water once or twice per day.

CautionAmla is an adaptogenic plant generally considered safe to use. However, there are some cases where caution is advised.
There is some evidence suggesting that individuals with iron deficiency should be careful, as amla may chelate iron and reduce the amount of beneficial iron in the blood.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as those taking medication, are advised to consult a doctor or an Ayurvedic specialist before using amla. Keep out of reach of small children.
