Organic white basmati rice
Basmati rice is a long-grain aromatic rice originating from the India-Pakistan region, particularly the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Their Sanskrit name 'basmati' means 'aromatic' or 'pleasant smell'. This rice is valued for its delicate aroma, long, thin grain and mild flavour. Basmati rice is mostly grown in monsoon climates and can be either white or brown.
When cooked, basmati rice has a slightly crumbly texture, as the grains remain separate and do not clump together. It is used in dishes such as plov, biryani, pulao or as a side dish.
Basmati rice is also valued in the context of a healthy diet as it has a lower glycaemic index than conventional long grain rice.
Preparation: wash 1 part of the rice in cold water, cover with 1/2 - 2 parts of water (less water is more bulk) and bring to a slow boil. Once boiling, cover and cook on the lowest heat for about 10 -15 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow the rice to swell for 5 minutes.
